11. What is a Karat? What is the difference between 14 karat and 18 karat gold?
Gold quality is measured in units called karats. Karats refer to the fractional parts of pure gold in the total alloy. Pure gold is 24K. The extreme malleability and softness of pure gold make it practically useless for jewelry applications. The additions of alloying elements (other metals) to gold are used to increase the toughness and hardness of the metal.
The quality expression is always in karats: 10K, 12K, 14K or 18K. This literally means 10/24ths, 12/24ths, 14/24ths or 18/24ths fractional parts of gold.
The resulting numbers are 42% fine gold in 10K gold, 50% fine gold in 12K gold, 58.5% fine gold in 14K gold and 75% fine gold in18K gold.
All yellow gold alloys contain other metals designed to change the gold’s color. For example, by varying the amounts of copper and silver, you can get pink or green gold. The more copper in the mix the pinker the gold, the more silver, the greener the gold. You can get white gold by adding copper, nickel and zinc to the yellow gold.
We carry only 14K and 18K gold products because of the quality assurance.
12. What is a carat?
A carat is a unit of weight for gemstones. One carat equals 1/5 of a gram, or 200 milligrams, 142 carats equals one ounce. The Karat of gold purity and the carat of diamond weight are not same word and are totally unrelated.
The diamond weight of carat is further divided in a unit called points. One point equals 1/100th of a carat, so 100 point diamond is a 1 carat diamond. For example: a 10 point diamond is 0.10 carat and a 25 point diamond is 0.25 carat.
13. What do I have to know about diamonds?
A diamond's value is based on four criteria: color, cut, clarity, and carat:
- Color: Diamonds are color graded from D through V, D being colorless to V being light yellow. The most valuable diamonds are the D color with cost and quality going down with the alphabet. The color is a very important factor in the determination of diamond value.
- Cut: this is the shape of the diamond. Common shapes include round, oval, trillian, baguette… etc. Proper cutting is essential to make the diamond reflect as much light and brilliance as possible.
- Clarity:
*Flawless (FI): Flawless diamonds show no blemishes or inclusions when examined under 10x magnification
*Internally Flawless (IF): IF stones show no inclusions and only insignificant blemishes under 10x magnification.
*Very Very Slightly Included (VVS and VVS2): VVS diamonds contain minute inclusions that are difficult for even a skilled grader to locate under 10x magnification. In VVS, they are extremely difficult to see, visible only from the pavilion, or small and shallow enough to be removed by minor repolishing. In VVS2, they are very difficult to see.
*Very Slightly Included (VS and VS2): VS diamonds contain minor inclusions ranging from difficult (VS) to somewhat easy (VS2) to see under 10x magnification.
*Slightly Included (SI and SI2): SI stones contain noticeable inclusions which are easy (SI) or very easy (SI2) to see under 10x magnification. These diamonds are sometimes called "eye clean" because they appear flawless to the naked eye.
*Imperfect (I1- I3): I-grade diamonds contain inclusions which are obvious under 10x magnification, and can usually be seen with the unaided eye. These flaws can seriously affect the stone's potential durability, or are so numerous they affect the transparency and brilliance of the stone.
- Carat: A carat is a unit of weight for gemstones.
